72 B-17g Flying Fortress

Thirteen .50 caliber machine guns positioned around this heavy bomber model plane kit demonstrate why the B-17G was referred to as the Flying Fortress. Under the plane, modelers are given the option of assembling the landing gear up or down and the bomb bay doors opened or closed. If left open, admirers of the B-17 model kit will be able to see the full bomb bay with racks and four bombs ready to drop on enemy forces. Intake ducts, elevator, and rudder are all separate from the rest of the wing and fuselage moldings, which gives the plane a more realistic appearance when completed.

72 B-17g Flying Fortress

The definitive version of this classic USAAF heavy bomber, the Boeing B-17G incorporated a host of improvements on the earlier models of the Flying Fortress. With thirteen machine-guns and optimized defensive firing positions, massed formations of B-17Gs would pound Axis targets on a daily basis, throwing up as much lead at attacking fighters as they possibly could. Arguably the most visible manifestation of American military might in the Second World War was the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress four engine bomber. Operating in massed formations, these distinctive aircraft were designed to conduct daylight precision bombing missions against strategic enemy targets, with the ultimate aim of literally pounding them into submission. As its name suggests, the Flying Fortress was bristling with defensive armament and it was intended that formations of B-17s could throw so much lead into the air that any attacking enemy aircraft would either be shot down, or simply fly away from their certain demise – although this thinking did not actually materialize in combat, it did help to give the B-17 a fearsome reputation. Without doubt, the definitive version of the Flying Fortress was the B-17G and this last mass-produced version of the aircraft was manufactured in more numbers than all previous...

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry (prototype Model 299/XB-17) outperformed both competitors and exceeded the air corps' performance specifications. Although Boeing lost the contract (to the Douglas B-18 Bolo) because the prototype crashed, the air corps ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances,[6][7] becoming the third-most produced bomber of all time, behind the four-engined B-24 and the multirole, twin-engined Ju 88.
