Brandywine Tomato Plants

Brandywine, which dates back to 1885, is the heirloom tomato standard. One taste and you'll be enchanted by its superb flavor and luscious shade of red-pink. The large, beefsteak-shaped fruits grow on unusually upright, potato-leaved plants. The fruits set one or two per cluster and ripen late-and are worth the wait. Brandywine's qualities really shine when it develops an incredible fine, sweet flavor.

The beefsteak-type fruits with rich red color and light pink-red undertones are meaty with full flavor and fewer seeds. The 3" fruits are great for sauces and canning. Brandywine Red tomatoes make a great slicing tomato for sandwiches or can be eaten straight from the vine with its sweet juicy flavor. Brandywine Red tomatoes also have the unique distinction of having 'potato plant' shaped leaves. The leaves of this unique tomato plant are smooth and oval rather than pointed and jagged like most tomato plants. Plant Brandywine Red tomatoes in full sun spacing plants 24 to 36 inches apart to accommodate their large size (5-7 feet tall). Moist well- draining soil with adequate watering is required. When planting these and all other tomatoes, plant to a soil depth just beneath the first set of leaves. That first set of leaves (called cotyledon-which means the embryonic first leaves) will eventually fall off. Roots will form along the buried stem, establishing a stronger root, thus a stronger plant. These tomatoes can also be grown ea...
