JAPANESE SWORD GUARDS-ART OF WAR by Gary Murtha- A 300 page (250 color pages), soft cover book that contains over 450 photos of over 250 different tsuba. I set out to make this book different than previous tsuba reference books. Although it contains extensive information on artists, schools, extensive genealogy, styles, techniques, family crests, and history, it also delves into related areas that most books fail to cover. I have used a kaleidoscope of ideas, stories, facts, and images to show the direct relationship tsuba have with Japanese art, history, folk legend, religion, nature, things related to everyday Japanese life, and of course the samurai warrior. Read about the three-legged toad, the white rabbit of Inaba, Saigo the monk, the eight views of omi, the heike crab, the mythical kirin, sake Sojo, Anchin and Kiyohime, the magical tea kettle, the fox's wedding, the demon Shuten Doji, the story of Yoro-yama, and Ono no Michikaze. Find out who the seven sages of the bamboo grove are. Learn about the battle at Sekigahara, the Gempei Wars, and the warriors Minamoto Yoshitsune, Kata Kiyomasa, Takeda Shingen, Nobushige, and more. In a kaleidoscope, many parts are moved in position to one another, inviting the viewer to look at the tsuba in a new and different way. This book is ...

"TSUBA-Japanese Sword Guards" 2012 book by Gary Murtha, containing information on over 65 tsuba making schools and groups, an artist index with information and kao and kakihan of nearly 2,000 artists and illustrations of over 60 b/w tsuba.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------My first book about Japanese tsuba was published in 1981 and was titled The Tsuba. I followed up with Japanese Sword Guard Artists in 1982 and The Samurai Sword-American Perspective Vol. II Fittings in 1984 that contained information on nearly 2,000 artists. All of my books have been out-of-print for close to thirty years. In 2001 a masterful 3 volume set titled Index of Japanese Sword Fittings & Associated Artists by Robert Haynes was published, but it is now difficult to find and price prohibitive for many collectors. The set contains an index of 12,560 artists and should be in every collector’s library if at all possible. Last year I started work on this tsuba book because I felt that an economical alternative was needed for those who cannot afford the high-end books. By using OCR technology I was able to activate portions of my book, The Samurai Sword-An American Perspective Vol. II Fittings, add illustrations and expand the information in the section covering ...

Disc hand guards on Asian (particularly Chinese) swords vs cross-hilted swords

Japanese Sword Guards

Several types of Asian sword feature disc (circular) hand guards. Here I draw some comparisons with cross-hilted swords and consider possible reasons for the circular guards as found on Chinese dao, Japanese katana and so on.
