New York Central Railroad Train

The EMD GP35 is a 4-axle diesel locomotive, manufactured between 1963 and 1965. More than 1200 locomotives were built for US, Canadian and Mexican railroads in those brief years, as many railroads were upgrading from older EMD F units or Alco locomotives. Originally designed for General Purpose (hence, GP) mainline duties, over the long lifespan of these locomotives they saw service in everything from mainline operation to switching and branch line service. There were numerous phase variations of the GP35, each with minor spotting differences such as number and locations of hood latches and louvers, as well as differences between fuel tank frames.

New York Central Railroad Train

A full generation has passed since a New York Central emblem dashed across the countryside on a railroad car, but few could ever forget "the greatest railroad in the world." The New York Central System grew from an amalgamation of smaller lines stretching from Albany to Buffalo in the 1830s. Twenty years later, the lines were gathered into a single company. Its phenomenal success did not go unnoticed by Cornelius "the Commodore" Vanderbilt. In his late sixties, when most men retire, he methodically started acquiring railroads in the New York City and Hudson River region. He then acquired the New York Central and merged it with his Hudson River Railroad. The Commodore and his son William, the foremost rail barons of their age, forged ahead with one of the most dynamic future-directed endeavors in the world-a railroad empire that traversed 11 states and 2 Canadian provinces.

New York Central Railroad Train

In the early years of rail building, a series of lines grew up between New York City, Albany, Schnectady, Utica, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, linking the Great Lakes and the Midwest to the Hudson River and the world. Brought together in 1853 as the New York Central Railroad, the line eventually served one-half of America s population, moving passengers in the northeast between New York, Chicago and Detroit, or from Boston to St. Louis. Engines and trains featured in the 2019 New York Central calendar include: New York Central 2946, a Class L-2 Mountain (4-8-2) is being serviced at Kankakee, Illinois on January 9, 1956. 2946 was built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in 1929. The Mountain-type was equipped with 69-inch driving wheels, which relegated it to a service life primarily operating freight trains. Referred to as "Sharks" because of their appearance, one-month-old New York Central 3815, a Baldwin Locomotive Works RF-16A-B-A set, is on a westbound freight coming through Lyons, New York on February 24, 1952. In September 1957, after a 15-year career marked by mediocre performance, all of the Sharks were set aside.
