The Conquest of Saxony AD 782–785: Charlemagne's defeat of Widukind of Westphalia
Charlemagne's conquests became the driving force in European politics between the Muslim defeat at Poitiers and the Crusades. He dominates the military history of Medieval Europe since his empire spanned France, western Germany, and northern Italy.Charlemagne's conquest of the Saxons was the hardest fought and most protracted of his wars. It involved 18 campaigns spread over 33 years, a great deal of lower-level fighting and the harshest final peace settlement that Charlemagne ever imposed upon a defeated foe. This was also the most important of all Charlemagne's war for the future direction and character of European history and, paradoxically, it also began the long process of uniting the German-speaking peoples.Starting in 772 with a series of raids and incursions, the Carolingian campaign rapidly took on the character of a religious conquest, and may well have been the inspiration for the later crusades against both Islam and pagan peoples of Prussia and Livonia. Following a series of revolts and uprisings under the popular Saxon leader Widukind, Charlemagne took the field personally in the years 782 to 785 and, through a series of pitched battles and smaller actions before finally brining Widukind to heel in 785, consolidating Saxony as part of the greater Carolingian Empire....

Journey Through Lower Saxony (Journey Through
Wandering the second largest federal state in Germany, this guide reveals the vast range of scenery that Lower Saxony has to offerfrom the North Sea’s islands and coast of East Frisia to the Emsland on the border to the Netherlands. The elevations of the Harz Mountains and the rivers of the Ems, Weser, Aller, and Elbe are also explored along with the rich and ancient history of the region, mirrored in its prehistoric burial mounds, the medieval cathedral at Braunschweig, the many edifices of the Weser Renaissance, the baroque gardens of Herrenhausen, and the neoclassical and Rococo houses of Osnabrück. Lower Saxony's many cultural, traditional, and natural assets are shown as being counterbalanced by a successful local economy, with several big car factories in the areas of Hannover, Braunschweig, and Wolfsburg. Beyond the big cities, this travel companion demonstrates how the region’s local customs are enthusiastically upheld, with fairy tales and legends telling of the Pied Piper of Hamelin and the witches of Brocken Mountain. Additional features focus on the coastal region of East Frisia, the artists' colony at Worpswede, the heath of Lüneburg with its moorland sheep, and a very special player in the history of the automobile: the VW Beetle.

Conquest and Christianization: Saxony and the Carolingian World, 772-888 (Cambridge Studies in Medieval Life and Thought: Fourth
Following its violent conquest by Charlemagne (772-804), Saxony became both a Christian and a Carolingian region. This book sets out to re-evaluate the political integration and Christianization of Saxony and to show how the success of this transformation has important implications for how we view governance, the institutional church, and Christian communities in the early Middle Ages. A burgeoning array of Carolingian regional studies are pulled together to offer a new synthesis of the history of Saxony in the Carolingian Empire and to undercut the narrative of top-down Christianization with a more grassroots model that highlights the potential for diversity within Carolingian Christianity. This book is a comprehensive and accessible account which will provide students with a fresh view of the incorporation of Saxony into the Carolingian world.

"Your Hearts Will Rejoice": Easter Meditations from the Vita Christi (Monastic Wisdom
The Vita Christi, a spiritual classic of the fourteenth century by the Carthusian Ludolph of Saxony, was an early and extremely comprehensive book of meditations on the events recorded in the gospels. A popular and influential book for centuries, it was instrumental in the conversion of Ignatius Loyola, and Teresa of Avila directed that every convent of her reform include “the Carthusian” in its library. This volume, which consists of excerpts from the full Vita Christi (forthcoming from Cistercian Publications), presents Ludolph’s meditations on the resurrection and the appearances of the risen Christ, concluding with Pentecost. Although shelves of books are dedicated to Christ’s passion, comparatively little spiritual reading for the Easter Season exists. This book is intended to help fill that lacuna and to introduce readers to this classic text.
